Survey: 79 percent of consumers believe they’ve seen fake local reviews

Image
Almost 75 percent also said they had been asked to leave a review. BrightLocal is out with its latest local consumer survey about local business reviews. The survey was based on a sample of 1,031 US consumers and covers a wide range of issues. It affirms the general importance and influence of reviews on consumer decision-making. However, there are a number of nuances and findings I found especially interesting. The top two considerations for consumers in considering reviews were average star ratings and overall quantity of reviews. In addition, how recent reviews were was important for many. Less important was whether businesses had responded to reviews, although that factor has gained in importance versus last year. After reading a positive review, fewer consumers said they were going next to the business website versus 2016. This showed a fairly dramatic decline. More people said they were seeking additional reviews to validate the “positive review” they ha...

You can now compare any two smartphones with Google’s new search tool

Image
When you want to find something out about a smartphone, I’ll bet that the first thing you do is perform a search on Google. Unfortunately, there’s no telling if you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for in the top result, so you may end up having to do some digging to get the information you require. That’s why a new tool that Google just rolled out for Search has us so excited, especially during a time of the year when the biggest new phones are launching. Over the weekend, Android Police was one of the first sites to report on a new feature that allows users to compare phones with a simple search. If you want to see how two phones stack up against one another, just search for both of them with “vs” in between, and a comparison chart with all the most important data will appear. The feature doesn’t appear to be available for everyone yet, but in order to test it, try typing in something like “iPhone X vs Pixel 2 XL” into the search bar. If you’ve been included in the test,...

Facebook set to help users transfer money, track breaking news tags

Image
Facebook has developed two new features yet to be tested: 'red envelope', to help users pay money, and a 'breaking news' tag, for publishers and news agencies. Facebook may soon start testing two features – ‘red envelope’ that would enable users send money to others from the platform, and a ‘breaking news’ tag that publishers can use to make people aware of the latest happenings around them. The two new features, which are not officially under testing mode yet, were first spotted by Matt Navarra, director of social media at the online publication The Next Web. According to Recode, Facebook confirmed that the ‘breaking news’ tag was for a future test, but declined to share more details. Recode said that the social media giant, however, neither gave information about “red envelope” feature, nor denied its existence. “Facebook is always testing new product experiences but there’s nothing specific to talk about at this time,” a Facebook representative was ...

How Technology Is Helping Rural Schools In Assam Keep Children Interested In Education

Image
Arifa, Afreen and Shabana, class VIII students of Milan HS School in Banekutchi of Nalbari district, tied a plastic cover over a leaf in a small plant. The next day, observing water droplets that had formed inside the cover, they learnt about the process of photosynthesis. Back in their classrooms, they found out from the Internet how aquatic and desert plants survive and then prepared a multimedia presentation on photosynthesis of different types of plants. Kaveri Borthakur, their science teacher, says that project-based learning using technology has improved students' interest and learning, making them more inquisitive about science. "Earlier students weren't interactive during science lessons and it was difficult to know if they understood what was being taught," she told VillageSquare.in. "Now when they do projects using computer applications, it is evident that they are learning." While technology has become entwined with urban lifestyle,...

Google’s on an uncompromising mission. It wants to give its users access to accurate information, unique content and the finest writers. It continually tweaks and improves its algorithms so that the best of the web gets the exposure it deserves. Unfortunately, there’s a flipside: a penalty. That’s the consequence of Google taking issue with something on your site. Sometimes a penalty is well deserved, but even if you know you’re in the wrong, you probably want to do something about it. What Is a Google Penalty? Google has been changing its ranking algorithms since December 2000. That’s when it released its toolbar extension. At the time, the toolbar update represented a sea change that would create the SEO industry as we know it. In fact, it was the first time PageRank was published in a meaningful or usable form. Over the next decade-and-a-bit, Google continued to refine the quality of its search results. Over time, it begins to eliminate poor quality content and...
