WhatsApp iOS update: Now watch YouTube videos within the app

Image
WhatsApp's latest update lets you play YouTube videos directly inside the app, in picture-in-picture mode. WhatsApp for iOS is getting a new update that brings two important features, notably, a picture-in-picture mode for watching YouTube videos, and a better way of recording voice messages. The information was first shared by WABetaInfo on Twitter. Perhaps the biggest change is that YouTube videos will play directly inside the app, in picture -in-picture mode. Now when you receive a YouTube link and click on it, the video will open within the app itself. Earlier the video would open in the YouTube app or browser. Also, one can keep playing the video while you navigate to another window. Though it might not be a big update, watching videos while chatting with friends is a boon for many. “When you receive a link to a YouTube video, you can now play it right within WhatsApp. With picture-in-picture, you can also keep watching the video while you navigate to another...

Brands pull YouTube advertisements over images of children

Image
Cadbury chocolates maker Mondelez , Lidl, Mars and other consumer goods marketers have pulled advertising from YouTube after The Times newspaper found the video sharing-site was showing clips of scantily clad children alongside the ads of major brands. Comments from hundreds of paedophiles were posted alongside the videos, which appeared to have been uploaded by the children themselves, according to a Times investigation. One clip of a pre-teenage girl in a nightie drew 6.5 million views. The paper said YouTube, a unit of Alphabet subsidiary Google , had allowed sexualised imagery of children to be easily searchable and not lived up to promises to better monitor and police its services to protect children. In response, a YouTube spokesman said: “There shouldn’t be any ads running on this content and we are working urgently to fix this”. The UK arm of German discount retailer Lidl, Diageo, the maker of Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker whisky, and chocolate makers Mond...

Net Neutrality: Let’s worry about what the FCC has done to the Internet

Image
If the FCC is able to change the rules, service providers in the US will now have the legal sanction to throttle a Netflix and force you to pay more for accessing this data-intense service. The customer will no longer be king, the service provider will. America is headed for a bitter battle over who controls the internet after the Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) decides this week to “stop micromanaging the internet” by repealing the path-breaking net neutrality rules set in place by the Obama administration. The 2015 rules were like the gold standard when it comes to defining net neutrality and if they are gone, the impact will be global and not just limited to the US. But what actually is net neutrality? Simply put, it is the rule that ensures all packets of data are treated the same. This means internet service providers cannot and will not speed up or slow down any packet for any reason. Internet service providers have many reasons to hate net neutrality, ...

Computer brain-training can reduce dementia in elderly by 29 per cent : Study

Image
A computerised brain training program reduces risk of dementia among older adults by 29 per cent, a 10-year study claims. The exercise is referred to as “speed of processing training”, “useful field of view training,” or “UFOV training”. It was developed by Karlene Ball of the University of Alabama Birmingham in the US and Dan Roenker of the Western Kentucky University in the US. “Speed of processing training resulted in decreased risk of dementia across the 10-year period of, on average, 29 per cent as compared to the control,” said Jerri Edwards, from the University of South Florida in the US. “When we examined the dose-response, we found that those who trained more received more protective benefit,” Edwards said. The study, published in the journal Alzheimer’s and Dementia: Translational Research and Clinical Interventions, enrolled 2,802 healthy older adults (aged between 74 and 84 years) and followed them for 10 years. The participants were randomised into a control ...

Twitter has suspended its account verification exercise – a process that gives public figures on the micro-blogging platform a blue check mark next to their names. The announcement came after people criticised Twitter for verifying the account belonging to the organiser of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that left one dead in August, TechCrunch reported on Friday. “Verification was meant to authenticate identity and voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance. We recognise that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it. We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon,” read a tweet from @TwitterSupport account. Jason Kessler, the organiser of the supremacist rally, was given the preferred status indicated by...

Image
Facebook has developed two new features yet to be tested: 'red envelope', to help users pay money, and a 'breaking news' tag, for publishers and news agencies. Facebook may soon start testing two features – ‘red envelope’ that would enable users send money to others from the platform, and a ‘breaking news’ tag that publishers can use to make people aware of the latest happenings around them. The two new features, which are not officially under testing mode yet, were first spotted by Matt Navarra, director of social media at the online publication The Next Web. According to Recode, Facebook confirmed that the ‘breaking news’ tag was for a future test, but declined to share more details. Europe’s first underwater restaurant to open in Norway

Image
A firm, that has designed Europe's first underwater restaurant, aims to provide information to the public about the biodiversity of the sea and expose them to an inspiring water experience, both 'physical and intellectual'. It will be open to public in 2018. A Norwegian architecture firm is planning to build Europe’s first underwater restaurant, a three-level structure along with a panoramic view of the sea floor in southern Norway. According to the official website of the firm, the restaurant, which will also function as a research center for marine life, is a tribute to the Norwegian coast and to Lindesnes – the wild fauna of the sea and the rocky coastline of Norway’s southern tip. The restaurant, which is named ‘Under’ has a double meaning to it. In Norwegian, “under” can also be translated into ‘wonder’. The structure, which rests on the sea bed five metres below the water’s surface, is built with metre-thick concrete walls to withstand pressure and shock f...

Amazon to introduce Key service for in-home packages delivery

Image
Amazon said Wednesday it'll launch a service called Amazon Key next month that will let people allow the door to be unlocked when they're not there so packages can be left inside. Don’t want Amazon boxes sitting on the porch? The company hopes you’ll let a stranger inside to drop them off. Amazon said Wednesday it’ll launch a service called Amazon Key next month that will let people allow the door to be unlocked when they’re not there so packages can be left inside. The proposal drew plenty of humorous reactions on social media, as well as concerns about safety or delivery employees being mistaken for intruders. Amazon said the drivers would be well-vetted, while one expert said the company has built up trust with customers and younger customers were more likely to try it out. An in-home delivery program also falls in line with Amazon’s strategy of trying to make shopping with it so convenient that consumers don’t think about buying elsewhere. And with the option requ...

Researchers Develop A Test That Can Detect HIV In Just 10 Seconds

Image
Researchers from the University of Surrey , in collaboration with colleagues at University College London, the Africa Health research Institute (South Africa), OJ-Bio (Newcastle), QV (holdings (Netherlands) and the Japan Radio Co Ltd, have developed a mobile test using technology found in smartphones, and it could provide doctors and carers with a virtually instantaneous way of diagnosing someone with HIV. The test uses just a single drop of blood from a patient to produce a positive test within 10 seconds. The test, announced in Scientific Reports, uses surface acoustic wave (SAW) biochips, which are based on microelectronic components found in smartphones. The disposable quartz biochips are extremely fast because they do not require complex labeling, amplification or wash steps, and a pocket-sized control box reads out the SAW signal and displays results electronically. Early detection of HIV is vital to help contain potential outbreaks, but existing tests require compl...

Yahoo says all 3 billion accounts hacked in 2013 data theft

Image
Yahoo on Tuesday said that all 3 billion of its accounts were hacked in a 2013 data theft, tripling its earlier estimate of the size of the largest breach in history Yahoo on Tuesday said that all 3 billion of its accounts were hacked in a 2013 data theft, tripling its earlier estimate of the size of the largest breach in history, in a disclosure that attorneys said sharply increased the legal exposure of its new owner, Verizon Communications Inc. The news expands the likely number and claims of class action lawsuits by shareholders and Yahoo account holders, they said. Yahoo, the early face of the internet for many in the world, already faced at least 41 consumer class-action lawsuits in US federal and state courts, according to company securities filing in May. John Yanchunis, a lawyer representing some of the affected Yahoo users, said a federal judge who allowed the case to go forward still had asked for more information to justify his clients’ claims. “I think we have thos...
