Five New Machine Learning Tools To Make Your Software Intelligent

Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft and other tech giants standing on the bleeding edge of AI/ML innovation are actively investing in the democratization of artificial intelligence. In the recent years, these companies have open-sourced many AI/ML libraries, tools or started offering these solutions as a part of their commercial offerings and cloud services. In this article, I'm going to review five machine learning tools that have been recently released for AI startups, developers and researchers.

TensorFlow Object Detection API

Object Detection API is a new feature integrated into TensorFlow, Google’s state-of-the-art software library for machine learning. The API provides a convenient way for ML developers and researchers to identify objects in images using optimized computer vision algorithms developed at Google. Object Detection API functionality comes with the MobileNets single shot detector optimized to run on mobile devices. Designed for the limited computational and power re…

Google’s 19th birthday doodle: But we don’t know whose birthday it is

Google’s doodle has surprises every time you spin the wheel, but it can get tiresome after a point

As it turns out, it is Google’s 19th birthday on Wednesday. And to celebrate it, the tech giant has plastered a rather elaborate doodle on the search engine’s homepage. It illustrates a proper party spread, with a cake, some candles and party hats too. Amid all this explosion of colour, it is easy to miss out on the spin wheel that sits just behind the chocolate (at it looks like chocolate) cake. Google calls this the surprise spinner, and you click on that to play the spin wheel game.

This game is available on the web version as well as the mobile version of the homepage. Keep hitting the play button to reveal a new surprise every time. When you spin a wheel, it finally comes to a halt at one of the surprises. You get the option of either spinning the wheel again (which is relevant if you have been spending too much time with this) or click to open the surprise. As it turns out…

Apple drops Bing search for Google

Apple has switched the default provider of its web searches for Siri on iOS and Spotlight on the Mac to Google from Microsoft's Bing.

Apple has switched the default provider of its web searches for Siri on iOS and Spotlight on the Mac to Google from Microsoft’s Bing. Now if you ask Siri to search something on the internet, you will get Google results instead of Bing on iOS and Spotlight – a system-wide desktop search feature of Apple’s macOS and iOS operating systems.
Apple’s web browser Safari on Mac and iOS already use Google search as the default provider, thanks to a deal worth billions to Apple (and Google) over the last decade, Tech Crunch reported on Monday.

“Switching to Google as the web search provider for Siri, Search within iOS and Spotlight on Mac will allow these services to have a consistent web search experience with the default in Safari,” Apple said in a statement.

“We have strong relationships with Google and Microsoft and remain committed to delivering the best use…

Artificial Intelligence Is Learning How To Develop Games

Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology are developing an AI that can recreate a game engine simply by watching gameplay.
This technology, as detailed in a press release, is being created in an effort to aid video game developers to "speed up game development and experiment with different styles of play." During their most recent experiments, the AI watched two minutes of Super Mario Bros. gameplay, and then built its own version of the game by studying and frames and predicting future events.
"To get their AI agent to create an accurate predictive model that could account for all the physics of a 2D platform-style game, the team trained the AI on a single 'speedrunner' video, where a player heads straight for the goal," Georgia Institute's communications officer Joshua Preston explained. This school of thought, he added, made the most difficult scenario possible for training the AI. By allowing the AI to study the actual frames of the game, res…

HMD Global is working on two new smartphones - Nokia 9 and Nokia 2. While the Nokia 9 will be a high-end phone, Nokia 2 is said to be a budget device
Rumours are swirling that HMD Global is preparing to release the Nokia 9 to steal thunder from Apple and Samsung. While the company is tight-lipped about the flagship smartphone, a new leak reveals the design language of Nokia 9.
A leaked image on Chinese social media platform Baidu purportedly shows off the Nokia 9 in full glory. In the image, we can clearly see the back side of the upcoming premium smartphone. It has a 3D glass build, akin to Samsung Galaxy S8 and Moto X4. It’s possible the Nokia 9 might include support for wireless charging. Also, it isn’t hard to notice a vertically-aligned dual-camera setup at the back.
Nokia 8 has just been launched, but it looks like the company is already working on a new flagship. Previous reports have claimed that Nokia 9 is in the works with a large 5.5-inch or 5.7-inch display. The display will …

August 22, 2017: The day the ‘Hawk’ Google local algorithm update swooped in

Have you noticed a recent shift in Google's local search results? Columnist Joy Hawkins shares everything you need to know about the 'Hawk' update, which seems to have killed some of the changes we saw with Possum.

What changed?
The update, which I have dubbed “Hawk,” was a change to the way the local filter works. To get some history here, Google actively filters out listings from the local results that are similar to other listings that rank already. Basically, Google picks the most relevant listing of the bunch and filters the rest. It’s very similar to what they do organically with duplicate content. (Note: Google is typically loath to confirm algorithm updates, usually only saying that it rolls out several updates every day, so these observations are based on an analysis of how local results have changed rather than on any official announcement or acknowledgment.)

The filter has existed for a long time to help ensure that multiple listings for the same company don’t mono…
