Google’s Doodle has surprises every time you spin the wheel, but it can get tiresome after a point As it turns out, it is Google’s 19th birthday on Wednesday. And to celebrate it, the tech giant has plastered a rather elaborate doodle on the search engine’s homepage. It illustrates a proper party spread, with a cake, some candles, and party hats too. Amid all this explosion of color, it is easy to miss out on the spin wheel that sits just behind the chocolate (as it looks like chocolate) cake. Google calls this the surprise spinner, and you click on that to play the spin wheel game. This game is available on the web version as well as the mobile version of the Google.com homepage. Keep hitting the play button to reveal a new surprise every time. When you spin a wheel, it finally comes to a halt at one of the surprises. You get the option of either spinning the wheel again (which is relevant if you have been spending too much time with this) or clicking to open the surprise. A...

Apple has switched the default provider of its web searches for Siri on iOS and Spotlight on the Mac to Google from Microsoft’s Bing. Now if you ask Siri to search something on the internet, you will get Google results instead of Bing on iOS and Spotlight – a system-wide desktop search feature of Apple’s macOS and iOS operating systems. Apple’s web browser Safari on Mac and iOS already use Google search as the default provider, thanks to a deal worth billions to Apple (and Google) over the last decade, Tech Crunch reported on Monday. “Switching to Google as the web search provider for Siri, Search within iOS and Spotlight on Mac will allow these services to have a consistent web search experience with the default in Safari,” Apple said in a statement. “We have strong relationships with Google and Microsoft and remain committed to delivering...

Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology are developing an AI that can recreate a game engine simply by watching gameplay. This technology, as detailed in a press release, is being created in an effort to aid video game developers to "speed up game development and experiment with different styles of play." During their most recent experiments, the AI watched two minutes of Super Mario Bros. gameplay and then built its own version of the game by studying and framing, and predicting future events. "To get their AI agent to create an accurate predictive model that could account for all the physics of a 2D platform-style game, the team trained the AI on a single 'speedrunner' video, where a player heads straight for the goal," Georgia Institute's communications officer Joshua Preston explained. This school of thought, he added, made the most difficult scenario possible for training the AI. By allowing the AI to study the actual frames of ...
